In colon cancer, majority of patients undergo surgery as the first treatment unless the disease is very advanced. After surgery, decision for adjuvant chemotherapy is taken based on the final pathology report. Patients with stage III colon cancer are usually advised to undergo adjuvant chemotherapy. The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is significant. There is 40 to 50% reduction in the chance of cancer recurrence in this group of patients. Patients who are very elderly (>75 years age) may not benefit as much for chemotherapy.
