I worked in an Alzheimer’s unit. We had very few visitors. The unit had about 30 people and we would see about one visitor a week between all of them. My unit was not for the newly diagnosed. It was for people who had lost a lot of cognitive function and most of their memory. They Knew This nice person had come to visit them, but had no idea who they were and forgot that they were visited a little while after their visitors left. I had one lady whose daughter would visit every few months. She didn’t know her, but her daughter brought her presents and treats. She would complain to her daughter that her family had abandoned her and she never saw them again. That was one of the higher functioning individuals who could still have a bit of a conversation even though she repeated herself every few minutes. A lot of my patients didn’t talk much anymore. It was heartbreaking for the daughter. I think it is heartbreaking for all the families and that is why they stayed away. It was like a very long drawn out mourning process. Instead of having a loved one die and mourning their loss. Every time you see them you realize that you lost them and you mourn again. It’s a horrible disease.
